BREAKING NEWS for all you party-goers:

image

daKAH, the world’s first Hip Hop Orchestra and the subject of the highly acclaimed film, “Hip Hop Maestro” by Christine Lee, is officially on their way to the Bay Area!

Through the generosity of their fan base and many of our local sponsors, staff and friends daKAH was able to raise the funds needed to bring the musicians up to this year’s Mill Valley Film Festival and will be playing at our Closing Night Party.  Imagine that!

The party is a recreation of the Roaring 20’s mixed in with contemporary culture. Who would have thought  you could take symphonic music, jazz and cross over into Hip Hop?  daKAH did!  Who would have thought a silent film, in black & white, would have Oscar buzz?  Mark & Zoe did!  And remember what they said about “The King’s Speech.”

Join us at Albert Park/the San Rafael Community Center after seeing “The Artist”  -a special film that has been hailed  as a “beautiful recreation of the silent film era.”

The gala will feature prohibition era drinks sponsored by SF Skyy Spirits, beer by Lagunitas and wine by Menage a Trois.

Sol Hernandez and her staff will be preparing the main menu from our favorite neighborhood restaurant Sol Food.  Marin French Cheese, Judy’s Breadsticks, Champagne French Bakery and Peet’s Coffee will all be on hand to serve up their delicious fare.

Lorin Rowan has lined up a jazz trio, “The Prohibitioners” with one of Marin County’s best jazz piano players hammering the keys at the baby grand.  daKAH and it’s chamber orchestra version of their band, (31 musicians), will close out the night.

This party closes the 34th annual Festival.  We want you to have fun and remember not to speak too easy!

Cheers,

Jen Oberti

God Bless America

“God Bless America,” a film directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, premiered
last Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. This violent
satire follows a 45-year-old, recently divorced man named Frank and a
16-year-old girl named Roxy who go on a road trip, killing the
stupidest, rudest, and meanest members of society. The film received a
very positive review from the audience at TIFF and was sold to
Magnolia Pictures. The movie is predicted to publicly premier in 2012.

Albert Nobbs Gets Rave Reviews at Telluride, TIFF, will screen at MVFF

Albert Nobbs, which screened at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado on September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and TIFF on the 11th and 12th, has begun to receive rave reviews from prestigious sources. Reviewers such as AO Scott of the New York Times have called it “a lovely and surprising movie.” The film, which was presented by star Glenn Close, is about a woman who poses as a man and works as a butler at a hotel in order to survive in male-dominated 19th-century Ireland. It has quickly garnered talk of an Oscar for Close, who plays the main character. She also co-wrote and produced the film, which has been a labor of love for her for thirty years, when she played the same part on stage and won an Obie for it.

The film is screening next at the Toronto International Film Festival on the 17th, and will be screening at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
