George Kuchar 1942- 2011
George Kuchar was a prolific, campy and ardently low budget filmmaker making underground films since the 1950’s. Kuchar’s legacy looms especially large in the Bay Area where he took up residence when he began teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1971. His undeniable influence is evident in the work of independent filmmakers Atom Agoyan, John Waters and the students he taught. For a MVFF Tribute to Kuchar in 1979 film critic Lenny Lipton was quoted as saying “Kuchar’s films are overtly insane…the utter insanity of perverted cliche is the genuine unwholesome appeal of Kuchar’s outlook.”
Do something whacky today in George’s memory!
